At first I though this to be a book of bullshit. I read Inger Christensen’s Alfabet as part of my graduate reading list, in part as a study in form and in part because it is a great example of ecocritical poetry.
The repeating motifs and repeating sounds and letters for each poem are less obvious than the ever-increasing lengths christnsen the poems, but they too serve as a reminder of an overarching CONCEPT to the book. Alphabetthough a work of verse rather than prose, is a tremendous achievement in world-building.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. The gorgeous poetry herein reflects a complex philosophical background, yet has a visionary quality, discovering the metaphysical in the simple stuff of everyday life.

The genius of this work can be found not only in the mathematically inspired composition, but in Nied’s brilliant translation Born inInger Christensen is Denmark’s best known poet. I also enjoyed the different patterns and visual breaks Christensen used inber the end of the book.
